How to Migrate from SAP to Another Ecommerce Solution

May 22, 2026

Since SAP Commerce (formerly Hybris) is approaching end of support, many customers are evaluating sustainable alternative ecommerce solutions.

These are the next steps for planning a migration from SAP to an alternative platform.

1. Technical analysis

First, evaluate the following elements to understand the technical foundation:

  • SAP version
  • Scope of custom code
  • Database layer
  • Hosting model
  • System operator (internal or external)

2. Surrounding system analysis

Assess all connected systems. Decide how they should integrate on the new platform.

  • ERP, PIM, CRM, WMS, OMS, DAM, Payment, Marketing tools
  • Type of integration (API, middleware, direct connection)
  • Target state: what remains, what is decommissioned, what is replaced?

3. Data migration & data quality

Define which data sets, records and systems must be migrated. Assess the quality, consistency and accuracy of the data to be migrated. Ensure GDPR compliance across all data migration activities.

4. Cloud landscape inventory

Identify which services already operate in the cloud, including hosting, CDN, payment processing and backup solutions. Review current contract structures and possible overlaps.

5. Middleware & integrations

Review middleware components used within the system environment. Assess their impact on system performance and technical dependencies.

6. Clarify business requirements

Identify required integrations, such as B2B/B2C systems, multi-shop environments, PIM solutions and omnichannel platforms. Define technical and business requirements for performance, security and cost efficiency.

7. License & cost analysis

Compare the current costs of SAP Commerce Cloud with the costs of the target platform. Include cost for migration and compare TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) over a span of 3-5 years.

8. Risk assessment & rollback strategy

Identify and evaluate critical risks. Define rollback scenarios and potential parallel operation for ongoing business operations until the migration is successfully completed.

9. Alternatives & migration plan

Compare available platform options (SAP Cloud, composable commerce, open-source).
Create a phased migration plan including a pilot project. Define your testing strategy.

10. Change management & hypercare

Provide training for internal teams, go-live support and a defined hypercare phase with monitoring and clear acceptance criteria.
